Among the many things U.S. President Donald Trump is currently known for, his ability to evade long-term pressure and consequences for his actions/words tends to stand out quite a lot. Some in the media have even called him Teflon Don.
There is something to be said about the way he has managed to entirely evade responsibility for his statements before, but it looks like luck may not be on his side this time.
In another controversial comment, Trump referred to various African countries as “s***hole countries,” asking why the U.S. continues to allow immigrants from those areas to come in. He also had some less than nice things to say about Haitians as well, and the whole exchange with a few lawmakers at the White House over immigration reform was a train wreck.
It did not take long for critical responses to start pouring in, and Trump is currently under a lot of fire from many sides. Some of the critical comments came from actual government figures and not the general public, including the Haitian government.
Many are referring to Trump’s apparent lack of self-awareness in making such a statement, while others have called for more sensitivity towards people in a difficult situation. Trump does not seem too affected by the way things have turned out though, and he has not issued an apology to the situation.
And while this tactic has worked fine for him before, it would be interesting to see if it fails him in this particular case. There is a lot of negativity towards the president right now, and one never knows where the tipping point might be. Could this be it precisely? Only time will tell.
Trump has a unique ability for dominating the news; he should not be counted out because in a few days he might come up with a new storyline to get the media off his back.
