Things are not looking good for former TODAY co-host Matt Lauer, as it recently came to light that accusations were brought up against him for alleged sexual misconduct at his old workplace.
The story is still developing, and new information is coming out slowly, but so far it looks like the accusations are coming in from more than one side, and there are at least two complaints against him for now.
The incidents apparently took place at different times, with one happening during the Sochi Olympic Winter Games in Russia, and the other about a decade older.
It is not clear whether the claims will hold any significant weight in court given the amount of time that has passed, but things tend to work in unexpected ways when it comes to sexual misconduct accusations in the entertainment world.
If this does get some traction though, it definitely looks bad for Mr. Lauer, as the story described by one of his alleged victims sounds quite disturbing and potentially damaging to his reputation.
As can be expected, Lauer has made an official statement regarding the whole fiasco, and we suspect that he will try to go under the radar for a while until he figures out how to approach the PR situation.
In it, the morning TV legend claimed: “There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions. To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry. As I am writing this, I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC. Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly. Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul-searching, and I’m committed to beginning that effort. It is now my full-time job. The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws. It’s been humbling. I am blessed to be surrounded by people I love. I thank them for their patience and grace.”
Meanwhile, more revelations about Lauer have started to come out, with people describing him in various unflattering ways, including allegations that he has cheated on his wife, Annette Roque, repeatedly in the past.
This could easily be the end of Lauer’s career, even if nothing serious happens in court.
