Actress Olivia de Havilland, who will always be remembered for her role as Melanie Wilkes in the Hollywood adaptation of Gone with the Wind, reached the remarkable age of 102 on Sunday, July 1.
The 102-year-old is now the only surviving member of the epic romance movie from 1939.
Despite that the actress is mostly known for her portrayal of Melanie Wilkes, she still was able to enjoy an impressive career throughout the years.
De Havilland is the proud receiver of two Academy Awards for best actress for her participation in the films To Each His Own in 1946 and later for her role in The Heiress in 1949.
The Oscar winner is also famous for being one of the first actresses who dared to challenge the conditions of her acting contract at the time.
After a successful lawsuit against Warner Bros, she managed to break free from her 7-year obligations to the company, and as a result, her actions left a lasting impression on the acting community in Hollywood.
The actress was born in Tokyo and spent the first three years of her life there before her parents decided to move back to England and settle there.
De Havilland’s sister was also an actress — Joan Fontaine — who passed away at the age of 96. The two of them are the only sisters in the history of Hollywood who have both managed to get an Oscar in the best actress category.
Three years ago when the legendary movie star was 99-year-old, she was asked how she feels about her old age, to which she enthusiastically explained that she would not trade it for anything.
Last year, she became the oldest person to be named Dame by the British Queen.
At the time, de Havilland said, she is “extremely proud that the Queen has appointed me a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.”
She is true Hollywood icon.
