After political commentator Mark Halperin was accused of sexual misconduct, Morning Joe star Mika Brzezinski tried to make things right — in her eyes — by organizing an event where he would apologize to his alleged victims for his actions.
And while Halperin was reportedly on board with the meeting and was willing to say his apologies, the whole thing has drawn a lot of negativity towards Brzezinski because some of the women found the idea confusing.
It did not take long for a public response to surface as several women, who have accused Halperin, stepped forward, slamming Brzezinski for her proposal.
According to the open letter, they have published, it is inappropriate to expect that an apology for something like this would suffice, and the whole plan for the meeting was a bad one from the start.
The letter also alluded to the fact that Brzezinski and Halperin are good friends, implying that she has a more direct motivation to help him out in this situation. Her critics argue that she just wanted some ratings out of the messy situation.
While she probably has nothing to gain directly from seeing Halperin’s name cleared, sympathy towards him could have driven her actions.
In response to the growing controversy, the TV personality shared, “As a victim of sexual abuse-assault actually, I DO understand. He was never caught. I DO understand. This SHOULD be a conversation. Not anger.”
The controversy still does not look good for Halperin, and he is one of many public figures to fall under the crosshair for such an incident.
Some have tried to defend themselves, others have maintained a low profile and have avoided all conversation regarding the accusations.
However, in the end, one thing is clear — this wave of accusations is not stopping anytime soon, and anyone who has ever been inappropriate towards their peers will likely face the public’s wrath eventually, possibly quite soon in fact.
